Microplastics are tiny plastic particles smaller than 5 millimeters that are created when larger plastic items break down or are manufactured in small sizes. They can come from everyday sources like plastic bottles, food packaging, synthetic clothing fibers, cosmetics, and tire wear. Because of their small size, microplastics can travel through rivers, lakes, and oceans and even make their way into drinking water. While water treatment systems remove many contaminants, some microplastics may still pass through conventional filtration methods.
